When resurfacing flywheels, equipment plays an important role in the quality of the flywheel surface. AMS does not recommend the use of brake rotor lathes or small tool room lathes. Hot spots are significantly harder than the surrounding flywheel material. Brake rotor and small tool room lathes do not have the required cutting tool support to allow the cutting tool to remove hot spots in a uniform manner. Instead, a flywheel grinder or CNC lathe should be used.
Because of the difficulties and complexities of flywheel machining, AMS strongly recommends the use of a new flywheel. If hot spots and wear flaws are not removed during the machining process, the flywheel will not be returned to a like-new flat condition, and power transfer and component life will be minimized by chatter, slipping, and heat build-up. Conversely, removing too much material may result in a detrimental reduction in heat sink capacity, a no-release condition, and interference with the crankshaft bolt heads to name a few. Under no circumstances should a flywheel be reused if the dimension between the friction surface and the crankshaft bolt heads is less than .3125”.
Furthermore, if the flywheel has been resurfaced, most medium and heavy-duty clutches will require a thicker clutch brake in order to maximize the adjustment capacity of the clutch. If a thicker clutch brake is not utilized, the adjustment capacity of the clutch will be dramatically reduced, resulting in shortened clutch life.
Finally, many of today’s medium and heavy-duty truck flywheels are not designed to be resurfaced. The ring gear has been mounted forward on the flywheel, near the friction surface. Even the slightest removal of friction surface material will result in interference or damage to the ring gear.
AMS offers new no-core flywheels for most popular medium and heavy-duty applications. Each flywheel is manufactured to O.E.M. specifications, using premium grade iron, new ring gears, and new dowel pins. To reduce vibration and maximize performance, each unit is dynamically balanced, backed by our comprehensive warranty, and priced competitively versus the cost of a resurfaced flywheel. Warranty costs and idle rack time are virtually eliminated. By including all new clutch related components as a precisely matched system, the job is virtually guaranteed to be done right. As an added cost-effective benefit, delivery costs are reduced because the flywheel can be delivered with the other components.
Listed below is a summary of additional advantages associated with new AMS flywheels:
• No core investment or rejection
- Eliminates the need for a thicker clutch brake or brake washer
- Maximizes the full adjustment capacity of the clutch
- Restores the release bearing stroke back to it’s OE position
- Includes a new flywheel ring gear
- Machine shop costs are eliminated
- Idle rack time is reduced because the flywheel can be delivered along with the other clutch components
- Warranty costs are reduced because each flywheel is guaranteed to be flat, smooth and free of cracks, scoring or heat marks.
- Each flywheel is backed by a 90-day warranty which protects against defects in manufacturing and workmanship
