Pilot bearings serve as a guide for the transmission input shaft. When the flywheel and pressure plate assembly turn at speeds different than the input shaft and disc assembly, the pilot bearing rotates.

Even though pilot bearings/bushings are only a small portion of the total cost of a typical clutch replacement, a new pilot should be included with each clutch replacement. Problems caused by a worn or damaged pilot such as excessive

noise, misalignment, and imbalance are not worth the labor cost to remove and replace the bell housing and transmission. What’s more, these problems may eventually cause considerable damage that would require a complete clutch system replacement.

AMS offers the industry’s most comprehensive pilot bearing coverage for medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Each bearing meets or exceeds OEM requirements, including the newest industry standards for high temperature shields and grease.

As recommended by truck manufacturers, all AMS bearings utilize the C3 clearance specification (measures between the rolling elements and raceway), providing optimal expansion due to heat/improper alignment, thus ensuring improved durability and performance. In order to properly match the bearing to the vehicle’s driveline components and operating conditions, AMS offers Nitrile sealed, Viton® sealed or steel shielded.

Nitrile and Viton® “rubber” sealed bearings provide excellent resistance to petroleum products and external contamination. As a lower cost alternative, Nitrile has been the industry’s most widely used elastomer seal, whereas Viton® offers improved resistance to the increased temperatures generated by today’s high torque engines.

Steel shielded bearings offer a less expensive alternative. They differ from sealed bearings in that their primary purpose is to shield the bearing interior, offering less sealing efficiency. However, because the steel shields aren’t designed as seals, they create less friction and lower operating temperatures.
